Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service organization. Chartered back in 1917, the first Lions Club was born out of the desire of one person to better his community through membership in an organization, embodied by the club's simple motto of "We Serve". Virginia joined the Lions Club ranks back in 1921. Today, there are close to 10,000 Virginia members participating in 321 Lions Clubs located in 6 different districts.
Since its inception, the largest service project of the Virginia Lions Club has been assisting the blind and visually impaired via sight programs, including the collection and distribution of used eyeglasses. Most of the eye banks around the globe have been established by and are currently supported by Lions Clubs, as are hundreds of eye research centers, clinics, and hospitals. Additionally, Lions Clubs serve the hearing impaired, promote diabetes awareness, sponsor youth programs, and much more. As a result, they have been recognized around the world for their service to the visually impaired and hearing impaired for more than 80 years.
